about

Jim is a UK based composer who first appeared in Upright Vol. I, with his piece Drifting Upwards. He has been very supportive of the project through his record label Bigo & Twigetti, which has released music from Nathan Schubert, Olof Cornéer (both featured in Vol. IV), Ben Crosland (Vol. III) and Yoko Komatsu (Vol I). As well as running the record label, Jim composes music for media, ads and performance and his work has been played on BBC Radio 3, NPR and RTE and performed live at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (London), the Turner Contemporary and the South Bank Centre.
The Wooden King is taken from Jim’s album Pools, which came out on the 3rd October 2019. It’s a wonderful work: rich, varied, accessible yet complex. The Wooden King the only piece for solo piano on the album (the others feature clarinet, strings, voice, and synth), and it immediately captures your attention with its gorgeous, melancholy opening chords before swelling into something much more moving and profound.
